Sri Lanka Celebrates Legacy and Heritage of Pure Ceylon Cinnamon in Mumbai

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, as part of the Economic Diplomacy Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, hosted an exclusive trade showcase titled "The Ceylon Cinnamon Story – A Sri Lankan Legacy" at Lisa’s Lanka, Bandra on 7 October 2026.

The gathering convened Mumbai-based members of the diplomatic corps, the Additional Director General of Foreign Trade (ADGFT), Mumbai, the President and representatives of the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHAR), members of chambers of commerce, industry experts, gourmet culinary leaders and influencers to highlight the unique value, heritage and quality of pure Ceylon Cinnamon, including its recognition as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in the European Union.

Addressing the invitees, Consul General of Sri Lanka Priyanga Wickramasinghe emphasized the historic depth and economic significance of Sri Lanka’s flagship spice export. The session highlighted Ceylon Cinnamon’s status as the first Sri Lankan commodity to receive Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) recognition from the European Union, registered in 2022. The recognition links Ceylon Cinnamon to its geographical origin and the qualities and reputation associated with the product.

The event also highlighted Sri Lanka’s Pure Ceylon Cinnamon certification trademark, administered by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board which promotes the identity and recognition of Pure Ceylon Cinnamon originating from and manufactured in Sri Lanka.

The event paid homage to the centuries-old trade routes that brought Ceylon Cinnamon to global prominence and highlighted its longstanding trade connections with key international markets, including Mexico and Latin America, the United States and the European Union.

With Western India—and Mumbai in particular—serving as a premier hub for hospitality and international commerce, the event served as a strategic platform to expand bilateral trade and introduce premium Ceylon Cinnamon to the discerning hospitality, trade and wellness sectors across the region.

Minister (Commercial) of the Consulate General Shirani Ariyarathne delivered a detailed presentation on Ceylon Cinnamon, covering its history and heritage, botanical identity, cultivation and traditional craftsmanship, distinctive characteristics, including its delicate floral-citrus flavour profile and much lower coumarin content compared with cassia, as well as its grades, certification, geographical recognition and culinary and value-added applications.
