The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), in collaboration with the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, successfully conducted the Destination Wedding Promotion Programme 2026 across key commercial hubs in Western India, with targeted press briefings and networking events held in Surat on 28 September and Pune on 30 September 2026.
The strategic initiative positioned Sri Lanka as a premier, accessible and high-value destination for Indian weddings, showcasing the island’s luxury hospitality infrastructure, cultural affinity and diverse landscapes to leading wedding planners, travel trade professionals and media representatives.
Addressing the events, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, Priyanga Wickramasinghe, highlighted Sri Lanka’s appeal as a premier and culturally attuned destination for high-end Indian weddings. She underscored the country’s expanding infrastructure and hospitality offerings, which are designed to enhance the experience for Indian families hosting weddings in Sri Lanka.
The Consul General also highlighted the growing air connectivity between Western India and Sri Lanka, noting that FitsAir commenced direct flight operations between Ahmedabad and Colombo in June 2026, complementing existing direct connections from other major Indian cities. She emphasized that enhanced travel convenience, together with Sri Lanka’s ability to accommodate special wedding rituals, provide tailored culinary experiences, facilitate spiritual and religious visits, and offer exceptional value supported by favourable exchange rates, further strengthens the island’s appeal to Indian families.
Key Sri Lankan industry representatives, including SLTPB Deputy Managing Director Chamila Jayarathna, SriLankan Airlines Manager for Western India Suman Udayakumaran, and Chaminda Madanayake, representing Sri Lankan wedding planners, also addressed the gatherings. They highlighted the range of specialized services, air connectivity and destination capabilities available to meet the requirements of grand Indian wedding celebrations.
The selection of Surat—internationally renowned for its diamond, gem and textile industries—and Pune, a major cultural and commercial centre of Maharashtra, reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening regional partnerships with wedding planners, travel professionals and other industry stakeholders across India.
With its geographic proximity, diverse luxury accommodation, distinctive cultural experiences and renowned hospitality, Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its position as an attractive destination for memorable and sophisticated Indian weddings.
