To commemorate the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima on 1 May 2026, the staff of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai hosted a traditional ‘Dansela’, serving free beverages to the public.
The initiative offered a welcome moment of cool relief to commuters and passers-by navigating the sweltering Mumbai summer. The dansela—a practice of organized free food or drink stalls—is a gesture of hospitality and a quintessential Sri Lankan tradition, that embodies the spirit of ‘dana’ (generosity) and compassion central to the Vesak celebrations.
By introducing this custom to the heart of India's bustling commercial capital, the Consulate General shared a touch of authentic Sri Lankan culture with the local community, fostering goodwill and highlighting the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual ties between Sri Lanka and India.
